Congratulations to our 2016 / 17 Space Time Studio Residents: Felicity Wardle, Kate Mornane, Nat Hafsteins, Venaska Cheliah, Darryl Butler and Jenelle Saunders.

Tracks offers studio space and time to Northern Territory resident dance artists in order to investigate, explore and develop new ideas for dance performance. Our focus is on emerging and independent dance practitioners. Space Time is a component of Tracks Dance Development Program.

Venaska Cheliah Nebula - "I hope to use this studio residency to further develop my skills as a choreographer/dancer. I would also like to use this an an opportunity to build relationships and develop a creative space between Tracks Dance Company and Dusty Feet dance collective in Alice Springs. I do not have a solid project idea as of yet. My current inspiration is the landscape around Central Australia and the colourful/unique life and community that is present there. I am also open to using film as a medium to portray my idea. There are many opportunities both in Central Australia and In the Top End that we can use to showcase our work. The Fringe festival being one of them and the other Unbroken Land."

Felicity Wardle Nebula -  "I hope to achieve two aims during my residency time. Firstly, use the space to develop and choreograph contemporary dance-circus pieces, with other local artists, for use in corporate performances during November and December. Secondly, explore some creative ideas for future performances and experiment with choreography techniques. Purely for play, expression and experimentation."

Kate Mornane Planetary"I would like to join forces with Tara Jane Schmidt, Jenelle Saunders and Alexandra Jordan. Each member will take turns running the sessions – bringing their ideas, personal attributes and experience to Space Time. This will provide excellent opportunities for each dancer to build confidence through facilitating and presenting ideas, and to see ideas expand and develop outside of the individual. The possibility to engage other dancers to facilitate or join sessions would also be exciting. Our group has backgrounds in social work, dance therapy, teaching, as well as a unifying love of dance.  So I envisage an enriching experience coming from each session.
The overall theme I want to explore through my sessions is ‘emotion and communication through movement. A way of confining this broad theme of emotion and communication may be to spend some time looking at the concepts with regard to femininity and fertility. An age old quandary between the extremes of our expansive choices vs lack of control over our bodies."

Darryl Butler Nebula - He has twice participated in the Choreographic Development Course and is an active member of the Grey Panthers for whom he has also choreographed two numbers. As a senior himself he is particularly interested in how dance inhabits the seniors’ bodies. Darryl is using this residency to explore "echoes and memories” and is working with Tracks Co-Artistic Director David McMicken

Nat Hafsteins Planetary - "Explore further ideas into a new work. Embrace local dance artists in the work. Ideas are still forming."

Jenelle Saunders Planetary - "Dancemongers - The goal is to have time to be immersed in dance with a fellow dance maker, Kelly Beneforti (dancemongers). We have discussed the drive we each have to make space for a solid chunk of time within which to work together… and bring ideas that we are both intrigued by... to make the dance that we would want to see."

Tracks announces the call for applications for our 2016/2017 Studio residency program - SPACE TIME

EOI due by 20 October 2016

    GUIDELINES

Tracks Dance offers studio ‘Space and Time’ to Northern Territory resident dance artists in order to investigate, explore and develop new ideas for dance performance. Up to 4 creative proposals will be supported each year via application. Our focus is on emerging and independent dance practitioners. SPACE TIME is a component of Tracks Dance Company’s Dance Development Program.

SPACE TIME residencies can be for pure ‘Blue Sky’ research, or for creative development of new project ideas. SPACE TIME is for development projects that would clearly benefit from a residency in a fertile environment that supports the creation of new Northern Territory dance works. (A SPACE TIME residency is not for rehearsing a performance.)

The primary aim of SPACE TIME is to identify and support NT based dance makers of vision and excellence, and to provide a level of support and resources. We are interested in ensuring strong development outcomes both for the dance artists we support and for the work they create. Non-NT residents may apply if their application has at least one NT dance artist who will benefit.

SPACE TIME is one of the mechanisms that Tracks uses to identify and develop future collaborations and partnerships.

Applicants will be encouraged to seek additional support for their work and the securing of such will not be seen as an impediment to the granting of a SPACE TIME residency.

    SELECTION PROCESS

Successful residents are selected through an open application process assessed by the Tracks Artistic Directors. Applicants are encouraged to talk through their applications with the Artistic Director/s  before submitting.

    SPACE TIME has 3 tiers
    1. Solar: 2 week residency (up to 80 hours) for dance artists with consolidated project ideas
    2. Planetary: Up to 40 hours for dance artists with emerging project ideas
    3. Nebula: Up to 20 hours for dance artists engaging in open research and practice exploration

    ADMINISTRATIVE AND PRODUCING SUPPORT
All SPACE TIME residencies will be supported by the Tracks Dance team, who will provide assistance with the following as appropriate:
    • induction session for all residents
    • studio scheduling & co-ordination
    • feedback & professional advice
    • advocacy & promotion (via our website, social media, and newsletters, and media releases)
    • future project 'mapping' if requested
    • residency wrap-up including public presentation outcome on April 1st, 2017
    • resident Artists will be covered by Tracks Inc.’s Public Liability and volunteer’s workers compensation insurances for their scheduled dates and times.
    • successful applicants will be contracted by Tracks Inc. for legal and safety purposes. However, the applicant remains the Producer of their work and is responsible for negotiating with any other artists involved in their residency.

    APPLICATIONS NEED TO SHOW
    • A clearly articulated and passionate vision with ideas that are bold, pressing, committed and relevant.
    • Demonstrated plan of how a studio residency would be used to develop project ideas or pursue dance/movement research, including budgeting where appropriate.
    • Suitably high standard of practice: Tracks will where necessary assist artistic initiators in identifying other potential collaborators.
    • What are the development and professional practice opportunities for Northern Territory artists? (Tracks seeks to support artists that cultivate a thriving NT dance sector.)
    • Who else would benefit from your residency? (Collaborating artists/dancers, community members, NT audiences)
    • Tracks will, where appropriate, suggest ways to maximise the skills and profile development opportunities offered through the development.
    • Tracks is particularly supportive of dance artists from Indigenous and Culturally diverse backgrounds.

    SELECTION CRITERIA
    • The potential to deliver quality artistic outcomes
    • The use of NT Artists
    • The experience of and/or potential benefit for the artists involved
    • Top End dance sector development
    • The potential to progress the project artistically, beyond a SPACE TIME residency
    • Audience relevance – Does this development have potential to move towards performance?
    • Does this project reflect contemporary expression of NT arts and culture?

In May - June of this year Tracks staff were in Lajamanu to get things started for this year's Milpirri. Tracks artistic directors David McMicken and Tim Newth, dancers Kelly Beneforti, Aaron Lim and Caleb Japanangka Patrick and musicians Marc Peckham and Rob Tremlett  worked together with Steve Jampijinpa Patrick (Milpirri Creative Director) and his father Jerry Jangala to establish the themes and key messages of Kurdiji.

Kelly and Aaron then worked in the school to establish the youth dance groups and link them up with their themes. A key reason for starting this year's Milpirri training in May is to give school staff a longer period of time to digest the themes and hopefully be able to integrate them into other areas of their teaching.

Marc and Rob worked closely with Steve and Jangala to record introductions to both the youth and traditional dance sections. They also worked in the school with students contributing to the vocals for the youth dance tracks.

A community meeting was planned to officially invite all family groups to participate in this year's Milpirri. However due to royalty meeting and Lajamanu sports events being held at that time , this was postponed until September when the company returns.

In the meantime, preparations keep happening in Darwin as we meet wih Alan Marshall who looks forward to evaluating this Milpirri edition.

All up a great start to this year's event. Milpirri 2016 will be performed on Saturday October 15th.
