Kalarra (West) Wind

Description of Dance

The west wind belongs to the yellow group (Japaljarri, Napaljarri, Jungarrayi, Nungarrayi), so the yellow group dancers start out the front of this dance.

The choreography combines hip-hop and contemporary dance movements to show big shapes and sweeping actions that reflect the breadth and power of the wind. The dancers all group together to move across the stage to represent the wind moving through the landscape from the West (yellow group corner). The spiralling and turning section shows how the wind can both coil up tightly as in a willy-willy, and spread across large distances.

"With the vast heavens filled with stars above, and the open almost endless landscape on the edge of the desert, working in Lajamanu has given me space to become more - more open, more accepting, more knowledgable, and now I also have much more of a family."
