Animals and Birds - Women and Youth

Description of Dance

Women - Yawulyu bird dances from Yinapaka: Jipilyaku (Duck) - Liddy Nampijinpa Miller, Pimparlajarra (Wood Swallow) - Biddy Napangardi Raymond, Kurlukuku (Diamond Dove) - Rosie Napurrula Tasman (Dec) and Ngatijirri (Green Grass Parrot) - Margaret Nungarrayi Martin

The youth enter the dancing ground as various animals in the desert: Red group is Wampana (Spectacled Hare Wallaby), the green group is Wardipi (Goanna), the blue group is Yankirri (Emu), and the Yellow group is Warlawurru (Wedgetail Eagle). They form circles like in a dot painting reflecting significant places or meeting grounds, and the senior women dance their Yinipaka bird dances in the centre of each circle. The youth also reinforce their kinship relationship to different directions that the winds come from. Red is south, green is east, blue is north, and yellow is west.

Concept

David (Japaljarri) McMicken, Tim (Jampijinpa) Newth, Nick (Japananka) Power, Kelly (Napurrula) Beneforti, Jess (Napangardi) Devereux and Caleb Japanangka Patrick

In the youth' dances there is a thematic link to the Wardapi (Goanna) and Wampana (Spectacled Hare Wallaby). In the womens dancers they danced Kurlukuku (Diamond Dove) and Ngatijirri (Green Grass Parrot). You can find alot of great information on these animals and birds on their Milpirri Banners Page.
